Information
Introduction
All students living in the residence halls, University Square
Apartments* and sorority or fraternity houses have the ability to
connect to the network via Ethernet from their rooms. This connection allows access to the main academic domain, campus
e-mail, the library system and the Internet. It will NOT, however, give
you access to the local area networks and software available in
individual computer labs.
What You Need to Get Connected
You will need an ethernet port and patch cable (or wireless card) to connect
your computer to the campus network. A patch (Ethernet) cable (RJ45)
that is 10BaseT cable with a maximum length of 10 meters is required.
Do you need to purchase a patch cable? Different lengths are available on campus for $15.00.
You may purchase one on campus at:
- Business Office in McClure Hall,
-
Campus Computer Store in
McFarlin Library.
Additional hardware
Minihubs - Minihubs are used when two computers are sharing one
data port. They can be checked out at Zink Hall, room 134 at no
charge. There will be a $50.00 charge if it is not returned at the
end of the school year.
Internet Software - Appropriate TCP/IP software for
your computer and operating system is needed.
PowerSurge Suppression and UPS - Strongly recommended for a
connection. This will help protect your computer from power spikes or
surges that travel through the electrical power supply system.
Data Line Surge Suppressor - Strongly recommended for
a connection. This will help protect your computer from voltage spikes
that travel through the building data wiring system.
